Bats of New York State

Bats of New York State

This program discusses the nine different types of bats that reside in NYS. We discuss each species including size, weight, speed, feeding habits, hibernation, breeding and population decline.

Program Length: 1-2 hours

Bat House Assembly

We provide the bat house kits and participants get a short overview of the Bats of NYS program and assemble the kits. Great program for youth groups, scouts, libraries, churches, municipalities and business groups among others. Participants take home the bat house they build. Donations to cover material costs is requested.

Program Length: 1-½ hours

Beaver in New York State

This program teaches about the beaver and its habits from damn building to tree felling. We discuss the history of beaver in NYS, impact on the environment, beaver distribution, predation, feeding and breeding habits, litters size and more.

Program Length: 1-½ hours

Bluebird: Official Bird of NYS

In this program we discuss the linespace, preferred habitat, history, feeding and breeding habits, family groups, attracting bluebirds, and fledgling rearing. Additionally, we cover installing and care of bird houses, distribution and range of species, and differences between males and females.

Program Length: 1-2 hours

Bluebird House Assembly

We provide bluebird house kits and give an overview of the Bluebird: Official Bird of NYS program. Youth, civic, seniors, municipal, scouts, 4H, church and other groups have enjoyed this program. Participants take home the bird house they build. Donations to cover material costs is requested.

The Eastern Coyote

This program covers the migration of the coyote into NYS, habitat, feeding habits, vocalizations, litter size, size of territories, predation and impact on wildlife, commercial values, encounters and more.

Program Length: 1-½ hours

Trout of New York State

Discussed in this program are the brook, brown and rainbow trout and some crossbreeds,  the origin of trout in NYS and worldwide and identification and NYS DEC Trout Stream Management Plan, We also discuss habitat, spawning, longevity, feeding habits, sizes, predation and more.

Program Length: 2 hours

Beekeeping

A Master Beekeeper teaches this course and the course is designed for both beginners and experienced beekeepers. Discussion of equipment, care, honey extraction, merchandising, habits, diseases, predators, cleaning hives and much more. Offered annually in the spring.

The Whitetail Deer

The American Bald Eagle

The program discusses the habitat, feeding habits, distribution and range, breeding cycle and habits, raising of fawn, predators, lifespan, hunting the species, diseases affecting deer, size and impact on the environment.

The American Bald Eagle

The American Bald Eagle became our National Symbol in 1782 and is a fascinating bird. The program discusses its history, decline and resurgence of the eagle as well has habitat, rearing of young, feeding habits, nest building, vocalizations, size, range and distribution, predators, impact on indigenous people, competitive birds and federal laws regarding the bird.

Program Length: 1 hour

Foraging for Wild Foods

The program is taught by a NYS Professional Guide with expertise on the subject. An in classroom portion of the program includes presentation on plant varieties and other wild edibles. The presentation is followed by a hands-on through the woods to forage and discuss further wild edibles. The program is offered annually each spring.

Program Length: 4 hours 

Tree Identification in NYS

A NYS Professional Guide teaching this program and includes a hands-on hike through the woods to species by bark, leaves and needles. Also discussed is the use of trees for commercial purposes.

Program Length: 2 hours

Wood Duck Box Assembly

We provide Wood Duck box kits and participants get a short overview of the Wood Duck and assemble the kits. Great program for youth groups, scouts, libraries, churches, municipalities and business groups among others. Participants take home the Wood Duck box they build. Donations to cover material costs is requested.

Living with the Black Bear

Living with the Black Bear

This program explains the lifespan and habits of the Black Bear including preferred habitat, feeding habits and diet, breeding, rearing young, hibernation. We also discuss dos and don'ts when encountering a bear.
